Questions & Answers about Bagarens kaka är stor.

How is the word bagarens built?
It starts with the noun en bagare (a baker). First, we make it definite: bagaren (the baker). Then, to show possession (the baker's), we just add an -s to the end, giving us bagarens.
Does Swedish use an apostrophe for the possessive 's' like English does?
No, Swedish almost never uses an apostrophe to show possession. It is a plain -s attached directly to the word. So it is bagarens, not bagaren's.
Why is it kaka and not the definite form kakan?
This is a strict rule in Swedish: whenever a noun is owned by someone (using the genitive -s), the noun that follows it must be in the indefinite (basic) form. Even though we are talking about a specific cake, bagarens already makes it specific enough, so we drop the definite ending and just use kaka.
Why do we use stor instead of stort?
Adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Because kaka is an 'en' word (en kaka), the adjective stays in its basic form, stor. If the baker had a big house (ett hus), it would be stort.
