Questions & Answers about Katten älskar maten.
Does Swedish always follow this Subject-Verb-Object order just like English?
In a simple sentence like this one, yes! Katten (the subject) comes first, älskar (the verb) is in the second position, and maten (the object) comes last. The most important rule in Swedish main clauses is that the verb must come second. This is called the V2 rule.
Why do both katten and maten end in -en?
That -en ending is how Swedish says "the" for most nouns. Instead of putting a separate word in front of the noun like English does, Swedish attaches it to the end. So katt (cat) becomes katten (the cat), and mat (food) becomes maten (the food).
If the subject was plural, like "the cats", would the verb älskar change?
Not at all! Unlike English (which changes between "loves" and "love"), Swedish verbs do not change based on who or what is doing the action. The present tense verb älskar stays exactly the same whether the subject is "I", "the cat", or "the cats".
