Questions & Answers about Familjen jobbar mycket här.
The lesson is about en and ett, but I don't see either word here. Why?
The word for 'a family' is en familj. But here, the sentence means 'the family'. In Swedish, you usually attach the en or ett to the end of the noun to mean 'the'. So, en familj becomes familjen.
Why does the verb jobbar end in '-ar'?
Jobbar belongs to the most common group of regular verbs in Swedish (Group 1). To make the present tense for these verbs, you just add an -r to the dictionary form jobba (to work). So, jobba becomes jobbar (works / is working).
'The family' implies multiple people. Do I need a plural verb form for jobbar?
No! Swedish verbs are wonderfully simple: they never change depending on who or how many people are doing the action. Whether it is 'I work' (jag jobbar), 'she works' (hon jobbar), or 'they work' (de jobbar), the verb stays exactly the same.
I have seen mycket translated as 'very' before. Does it also mean 'a lot'?
Yes! Mycket is a versatile word. When you put it before a describing word, it means 'very' (like mycket bra for 'very good'). When you use it to describe how much someone does an action, like working in this sentence, it means 'a lot' or 'much'.
