Unreal past conditionals (skulle ha)

To express hypothetical past situations—things that never happened—combine a past perfect condition with a conditional result.

Building the Conditional

To build an unreal past conditional, you need two pieces:

  • The Condition: Introduced by om (if), this clause uses the past perfect tense (hade
    • supinum).
  • The Result: The main clause shows what would have happened using skulle ha (would have) + supinum.

When you start a sentence with the om clause, remember Swedish's V2 (verb-second) rule. The entire om clause counts as the first position, so the main clause must begin immediately with the verb (skulle).

If I had dared, I would have taken the chance.
Om jag hade vågat, skulle jag ha tagit chansen.
If we had ignored the advice, we would have lost the money.
Om vi hade ignorerat rådet, skulle vi ha förlorat pengarna.

Reversing the Order

You can swap the halves of the sentence, putting the result first. When you do, the main clause takes standard word order.

I would have given him the advice if he had hesitated.
Jag skulle ha gett honom rådet om han hade tvekat.

Adding Negation

When adding inte (not):

  • In the main clause: inte goes right after the finite verb (skulle inte ha).
  • In the om clause: Because an om clause is a subordinate clause, inte must come before the first verb (om [subject] inte hade).
If you had warned me, I would not have done it.
Om du hade varnat mig, skulle jag inte ha gjort det.
If he had not hesitated, he would not have missed the opportunity.
Om han inte hade tvekat, skulle han inte ha missat tillfället.
