Explaining with Nämligen
When you want to explain, justify, or clarify a statement, Swedish uses the adverb nämligen.

While it translates directly to "namely," in practice it often functions like the English phrases "you see," "the thing is," or "because."
| The biologist needs a microscope. The cell is very small, you see. | Biologen behöver ett mikroskop. Cellen är nämligen väldigt liten. |
Mid-Clause Placement
Because nämligen is a sentence adverb, it takes the mid-clause position. In a standard main clause, it comes immediately after the finite (conjugated) verb.
| We are using the microscope. We want to observe the bacteria, you see. | Vi använder mikroskopet. Vi vill nämligen observera bakterien. |
Notice how the English translation puts "you see" at the end of the sentence. In Swedish, nämligen stays firmly locked into its mid-clause slot after the verb (vill).
| The researcher is analyzing the gene. It is an important molecule, you see. | Forskaren analyserar genen. Det är nämligen en viktig molekyl. |
Using Nämligen with Reflexive Verbs
When using a reflexive verb, such as föröka sig (to reproduce), nämligen is placed directly after the reflexive pronoun (sig).
| We cannot observe the organism today. It reproduces at night, you see. | Vi kan inte observera organismen idag. Den förökar sig nämligen på natten. |
Providing Reasoning
Nämligen is especially useful in academic or scientific contexts to state an observation and immediately provide the reasoning behind it.
| The biologist must change the hypothesis. The molecule is too large, you see. | Biologen måste ändra hypotesen. Molekylen är nämligen för stor. |
| We must understand the molecule. The hypothesis is complicated, you see. | Vi måste förstå molekylen. Hypotesen är nämligen komplicerad. |
