Using "samma" and "nästa"
When using samma (the same) or nästa (the next), the following noun must always be in its indefinite form. Even though we say "the same" or "the next" in English, you do not use the definite suffix in Swedish.
| We listened to the same poem. | Vi lyssnade på samma dikt. |
| I did not write the next chapter. | Jag skrev inte nästa kapitel. |
Notice how the sentences use samma dikt (not dikten) and nästa kapitel (not kapitlet).
No gender agreement needed
Another convenient feature of samma and nästa is that they never change. Whether the noun is an en-word or an ett-word, these determiners keep the exact same form.
| The next poem is on the same page. | Nästa dikt är på samma sida. |
| The book and the film have the same title. | Boken och filmen har samma titel. |
