Resultative reflexives (skratta sig hes)

Resultative Reflexives

In English, we might say we "eat ourselves sick." Swedish uses this structure frequently to describe doing an action until a specific state is reached.

You need three parts: a verb, a reflexive pronoun (mig, dig, sig, oss, er), and an adjective describing the result.

Because the adjective describes the subject, it must agree in gender and number. If the subject is plural, the adjective takes the plural ending -a.

We eat ourselves full at the buffet.
Vi äter oss mätta på buffén.
You must not stare yourself blind at the chocolate fountain.
Du får inte stirra dig blind på chokladfontänen.
I always eat myself stuffed when I gorge.
Jag äter mig alltid proppmätt när jag frossar.

Remember to use sig for all third-person subjects, both singular and plural.

The table neighbor laughed himself hoarse at the cheese board.
Bordsgrannen skrattade sig hes vid ostbrickan.
They eat themselves tired before the food coma comes.
De äter sig trötta innan matkoman kommer.

For ni (plural you), use the reflexive pronoun er and the plural form of the adjective.

You stare yourselves blind at the very most expensive cheese boards.
Ni stirrar er blinda på de allra dyraste ostbrickorna.
