Quantity approximations (drygt, knappt)

Estimating with Drygt

To say that a number or amount is "just over" or "a little more than", use the adverb drygt.

I guess that there are just over a thousand visitors here.
Jag gissar att det är drygt tusen besökare här.
We were at the market just over an hour ago.
Vi var på marknaden för drygt en timme sedan.

Estimating with Knappt

The opposite of drygt is knappt, which means "just under" or "barely".

You will frequently use both words to estimate time, crowd sizes, and distances. Note that en mil (a Scandinavian mile) is not an English mile—it equals exactly 10 kilometers!

The distance to the festival is just under a Swedish mile.
Avståndet till festivalen är knappt en mil.
It is barely fifty meters to the stage, you know.
Det är ju knappt femtio meter till scenen.

Summing it Up

To summarize an amount, use the word sammanlagt (in total). You can easily combine it with drygt or knappt to give an estimated grand total.

There are just over a hundred people here in total.
Det är sammanlagt drygt hundra människor här.
We had just under a thousand visitors in total.
Vi hade knappt tusen besökare sammanlagt.
