When comparing items, you often want to refer back to a noun without repeating it. In English, we use the placeholder word "one"—as in, "the white stove or the stainless *one*".

In Swedish, you do not use a placeholder word at all. You simply drop the noun entirely, leaving just the freestanding definite article (**den** or **det**) and the definite adjective (which usually ends in **-a**).

### Matching the Gender

Even though the noun is "invisible," the article you use must still match its gender. Use **den** when referring back to an *en*-word (like a stove or dishwasher) and **det** when referring back to an *ett*-word (like a fridge). The adjective keeps its definite **-a** ending either way.

### Using "This One" and "That One"

You can also apply this exact same pattern with demonstratives like **den här** (this) and **den där** (that). Just pair the demonstrative directly with the definite adjective, and leave the noun out.
