More core particle verbs (hoppa över, gå sönder)

Everyday Particle Verbs

Another set of pairs whose meaning you cannot read off the parts. Hoppa över is not to jump over something physical in most uses — it is to skip: a chapter, a meal, a turn.

particle verbEnglish
hoppa överto skip
gå sönderto break, stop working
ladda nerto download
köra överto run over; to steamroll
prova påto try out
vila utto rest up
We are skipping chapter three.
Vi hoppar över kapitel tre.

Gå sönder is how Swedish says a thing broke without saying who broke it — telefonen gick sönder, not jag bröt telefonen.

Literal and Figurative

Köra över keeps both readings: a car runs someone over, and a chairman runs a colleague over in a meeting. Context does all the work.

The boss steamrolled the whole group.
Chefen körde över hela gruppen.

Pointing and Connecting

Tyda på means to indicate — it is what evidence does, and it belongs in the written register you are building. Relatera till is to relate to, and höra hemma is to belong, of a thing that is in its right place.

Everything indicates that he is right.
Allt tyder på att han har rätt.
