Many, more, most (många, fler, flest)

Counting things with många, fler, and flest

When talking about quantities of things you can count—like votes, parties, or politicians—Swedish uses många (many), fler (more), and flest (most).

Today many will vote in the election.
Idag ska många rösta i valet.

Fler (More)

Use fler to say "more" for things you can count individually.

The party needs more votes.
Partiet behöver fler röster.

You can also drop the noun if it's already understood from context:

We had many votes, but they had more.
Vi hade många röster, men de hade fler.

Flest (Most)

Use flest for "the most" of a countable noun.

The party that has the most votes gets the majority.
Partiet som har flest röster får majoriteten.
Who do you think gets the most votes in the election?
Vem tror du får flest röster i valet?

Politics and elections

These quantifiers are especially useful when discussing elections (valet), debates (debatten), and the government (regeringen).

After the debate the politician had more votes.
Efter debatten hade politikern fler röster.
More parties support the government in the election.
Fler partier stöttar regeringen i valet.
