Lack of necessity (behöver inte)
To express that something is not required—that you "do not have to" or "do not need to" do it—use behöver inte followed by a bare infinitive (an infinitive verb without the marker att).
| You do not need to use the uniform today. | Du behöver inte använda uniformen idag. |
Prohibition (får inte)
Be careful not to confuse a lack of necessity with a prohibition. To express a strict rule that you "must not" or "are not allowed to" do something, use får inte followed by a bare infinitive.
| But you must not forget the access card at home. | Men du får inte glömma passerkortet hemma. |
Workplace Rules and Safety
When discussing workplace policies, you will often clarify what is mandatory (obligatorisk) and what is voluntary (frivillig).
| The helmet is mandatory, so you must not take it off. | Hjälmen är obligatorisk, så du får inte ta av dig den. |
| The training is voluntary, so you do not need to participate. | Utbildningen är frivillig, så du behöver inte delta. |
Notice how changing the verb completely flips the meaning of a sentence:

You can combine these phrases to clearly distinguish between what is forbidden and what is simply not required:
