Inseparable verb prefixes (be-, för-, er-)

Inseparable Verb Prefixes

In formal Swedish, especially in administrative or official contexts, you will frequently encounter verbs starting with the prefixes be-, för-, and er-. These are "inseparable" prefixes. Unlike verb particles, they are permanently attached to the front of the root word and never split from it. They often change the root's meaning entirely, make it more formal, or turn an adjective into a verb.

The Prefix be-

The prefix be- often makes an action more directed, formal, or transitive (requiring a direct object).

For instance, svara simply means "to answer," but besvara means "to reply to [something]." Similarly, besluta is a formal way to say "to decide."

Those who answer the question must also decide on the permit.
De som besvarar frågan måste också besluta om tillståndet.

Another very common be- verb in official contexts is begära (to request):

The authority can request more information before it grants the permit.
Myndigheten kan begära mer information innan den beviljar tillståndet.

The Prefix för-

The prefix för- often indicates a transformation or a change of state. It is frequently attached to adjectives to create a verb.

For example, ny (new) becomes förnya (to renew), and lång (long) becomes förlänga (to extend).

You must renew the permit instead of requesting a new one.
Du måste förnya tillståndet i stället för att begära ett nytt.

It can also attach to verbs to alter or intensify their meaning, such as hindra (to stop/hinder) becoming förhindra (to prevent).

The authority tried to prevent the problem. However, it failed.
Myndigheten försökte förhindra problemet. Däremot misslyckades den.

The Prefix er-

The prefix er- often relates to acquiring something, reaching a goal, or making a substitution.

For example, hålla means "to hold," but erhålla is a formal word for "to receive" or "to obtain." Sätta means "to put," while ersätta means "to replace."

If you lose the card, you can obtain a new one that replaces the old one.
Om du förlorar kortet kan du erhålla ett nytt som ersätter det gamla.
We must decide to replace the system to prevent the crisis.
Vi måste besluta att ersätta systemet för att förhindra krisen.

Combining Formal Verbs

Because these prefixed verbs belong to formal registers, you will often see them clustered together in official correspondence or business decisions. They pair naturally with formal transition words like dessutom (furthermore) and däremot (however).

The board decided to extend the project. Furthermore, it wants to renew the contract.
Styrelsen beslutade att förlänga projektet. Dessutom vill den förnya avtalet.
Whoever receives the grant shall extend the project and answer the question.
Den som erhåller bidraget ska förlänga projektet och besvara frågan.
