At someone's place: hos
In English, we often use an apostrophe "s" to say we are at a person's home or a professional's workplace, like "at the doctor's" or "at Anna's". In Swedish, this is expressed with the preposition hos.
| I am at the optician's now. | Jag är hos optikern nu. |
| I am at the doctor's for the examination. | Jag är hos läkaren för undersökningen. |
Professions and names
When talking about a professional's workplace, the job title is typically used in the definite form (e.g., optikern for "the optician's", mekanikern for "the mechanic's"). You also use hos before a person's name to say you are at their home.
| We are having coffee at Anna's in two days. | Vi fikar hos Anna om två dagar. |
| The dog is getting the expensive treatment at the vet's. | Hunden får den dyra behandlingen hos veterinären. |
| The car is at the mechanic's. | Bilen står hos mekanikern. |
Appointments and objects
You will frequently use hos to describe where a specific event or appointment takes place, or to explain where an object is currently located.
| The haircut at the hairdresser's is very expensive. | Klippningen hos frisören är mycket dyr. |
| Which receipt is at the accountant's? | Vilket kvitto ligger hos revisorn? |
