Adjective prepositions (intresserad av, stolt över)

Mass Nouns in General Statements

In Swedish, mass nouns—uncountable things like food, materials, or broad concepts (such as coffee, chocolate, or literature)—do not take an article (en/ett) in general statements. This works exactly like English.

Children often eat chocolate on weekends.
Barn äter ofta choklad på helgerna.
I love literature, but I rarely read it now.
Jag älskar litteratur, men jag läser den sällan nu.

Adjectives and Prepositions

Many adjectives naturally pair with specific prepositions. Because prepositions rarely map one-to-one between languages, it is best to learn these as fixed phrases.

For example, to say you are "good at" or "bad at" something, use (bra på, dålig på). Keep in mind that the adjective must still agree with the noun it describes in gender and number.

My sister is a doctor and she is good at her job.
Min syster är läkare och hon är bra på sitt jobb.
Which language are you bad at?
Vilket språk är du dålig på?

Actions After Prepositions

If a preposition is followed by an action rather than a noun, use att and an infinitive verb.

He drinks a lot of coffee because he wants to be good at focusing.
Han dricker mycket kaffe eftersom han vill vara bra på att fokusera.
I am an architect, but I am bad at painting.
Jag är arkitekt, men jag är dålig på att måla.

Expressing Traits and Emotions

Different traits and emotions require specific prepositions. To express pride, use över (stolt över). For being known or worried about something, use för (känd för, orolig för).

She is an engineer and we are proud of her.
Hon är ingenjör och vi är stolta över henne.
The author is known for writing about history.
Författaren är känd för att skriva om historia.
We are drinking tea and are not worried about the test.
Vi dricker te och är inte oroliga för provet.

Interests and Habits

Other common combinations for discussing personal interests, obsessions, and routines include:

  • intresserad av (interested in)
  • nyfiken på (curious about)
  • galen i (crazy about)
  • van vid (used to)
The book that you are interested in is about English literature.
Boken som du är intresserad av handlar om engelsk litteratur.
I do not know her, but I am curious about her.
Jag känner inte henne, men jag är nyfiken på henne.
My brother is a police officer and he is crazy about sports.
Min bror är polis och han är galen i sport.
We are used to cold weather in the north.
Vi är vana vid kallt väder i norr.
