Why do we use por instead of en for "in"?
When talking about a general part of the day, Spanish uses por instead of the direct translation for "in". The phrase por la mañana is the standard way to say "in the morning".
I thought mañana meant "tomorrow". Why does it mean "morning" here?
The word mañana actually means both! You can tell them apart by how they are used. When it has the feminine word for "the" in front of it (la mañana), it means "the morning". When used on its own to say when something happens, it means "tomorrow".
Since this lesson is about telling time with a las, do we use a las with "morning" too?
We use a las for exact clock times, like a las ocho (at eight). For a general time like "in the morning", we just use por la mañana. But if you combine them, you must use de instead of por: a las ocho de la mañana means "at eight in the morning".
Why doesn't trabaja end in an "s" like the English word "works"?
Spanish verb endings are different. In English, we add an "s" for "he" or "she", but in Spanish, an "s" on a verb usually means "you" (like tú trabajas). For "she" (ella), we take off the "s", so it becomes ella trabaja.
