Questions & Answers about El zapato morado es pequeño.
In English we say "purple shoe." Why does morado come after zapato in this sentence?
In Spanish, descriptive words (adjectives) like colors usually come after the noun they describe. So, instead of "purple shoe," you say "shoe purple" (zapato morado).
Why do both morado and pequeño end in -o?
They end in -o to match the word they describe: zapato (shoe). Because zapato is a masculine, singular word, any adjective describing it must also be in its masculine, singular form. If we were talking about a feminine word like a t-shirt (la camiseta), the adjectives would change to morada and pequeña.
Why doesn't pequeño sit right next to zapato like morado does?
Just like in English, you can place a description after the verb. Morado is grouped with the noun to form the subject ("The purple shoe"), while pequeño is the point of the sentence ("is small"). Notice that pequeño still has to match zapato with an -o ending, even though they are separated by the verb es!
