Speed dating interrogations
To recount a "yes or no" question someone asked you, use preguntar (to ask) followed by si (if / whether).
| He asked me if I was single and romantic. | Él me preguntó si era soltero y romántico. |
| The girl asked if I was very faithful or jealous. | La chica preguntó si era muy fiel o celoso. |
Notice how the tense of the reported question often shifts a step back into the past (e.g., from present to imperfect). However, if the question is about a general fact that is still true, the present tense can remain:
| They asked me directly if being faithful is a necessary quality. | Me preguntaron directamente si ser fiel es una cualidad necesaria. |
Keeping the question words
If the original question used an interrogative word like qué, cuál, cómo, or por qué, use that same word to link the sentences. These question words always keep their written accent marks, even when embedded in a statement!
| She asked me what my worst flaw and my best quality were. | Ella me preguntó cuál era mi peor defecto y mi mejor cualidad. |
| He asked why women don't look for a romantic and affectionate husband. | Él preguntó por qué las mujeres no buscan un esposo romántico y cariñoso. |
