Conjugating regular -er verbs

Spanish verbs are grouped by their endings: -ar, -er, and -ir. To conjugate a regular -er verb in the present tense, drop the -er from the infinitive and add the ending that matches the subject.

Here are common regular -er verbs like beber (to drink), leer (to read), and comprender (to understand) in action:

I drink coffee in the morning.
Yo bebo café en la mañana.
Do you drink milk at breakfast?
¿Tú bebes leche en el desayuno?
She reads a book in the afternoon.
Ella lee un libro en la tarde.
We eat bread and drink water.
Nosotros comemos pan y bebemos agua.
They do not understand Spanish.
Ellos no comprenden el español.

Using -er verbs in conversation

You can mix and match these endings to talk about what different people eat, drink, or do. Notice how the verb ending always changes to match who is doing the action.

I eat apples and you eat bread.
Yo como manzanas y tú comes pan.
I read the letter but I don't understand.
Yo leo la carta pero no comprendo.
Our brother drinks coffee and reads the letter.
Nuestro hermano bebe café y lee la carta.
