Doing Things to "Each Other"
When two or more people perform an action on each other, Spanish uses reciprocal pronouns. Because these actions involve multiple people, we only use the plural pronouns: nos (we) and se (they / you all).
| My boyfriend and I love each other a lot. | Mi novio y yo nos amamos mucho. |
| We fight, but we always forgive each other. | Nos peleamos, pero siempre nos perdonamos. |
Using "Se"
When talking about what a couple, your friends, or any other group does to each other, use se.
| Those actors hate each other. | Esos actores se odian. |
| The boyfriend and the girlfriend respect each other a lot. | El novio y la novia se respetan mucho. |
Placement and Tenses
Reciprocal pronouns work exactly like reflexive pronouns. They usually go right before the conjugated verb. This is true no matter what tense you are using.
| We met at the university. | Nos conocimos en la universidad. |
| My parents hugged at the airport. | Mis padres se abrazaron en el aeropuerto. |
If you are using a continuous tense, the pronoun can go before the conjugated verb, or attach to the end of the action verb (-ando / -iendo).
| He and his girlfriend are kissing. | Él y su novia se están besando. |
