Expressing Purpose with "Para que"

When you explain why you are doing something so that another person can benefit or take action, use the phrase para que (so that).

Because the intended outcome hasn't happened yet, the verb following para que is always in the subjunctive mood.

I am giving you the recipe so that you prepare dinner.
Te doy la receta para que prepares la cena.
I am cleaning the house so that you are comfortable.
Limpio la casa para que estés cómodo.

Teamwork and Collaboration

This structure is extremely common when sharing resources, delegating tasks, or collaborating. Notice how the first verb (the action taken) is in the indicative mood, while the second verb (the intended result) is in the subjunctive.

I am sending you the summary so that you advance the project.
Te envío el resumen para que adelantes el proyecto.
Could you review the draft so that we correct the errors?
¿Podrías revisar el borrador para que corrijamos los errores?
He wants the password so that we review the document.
Él quiere la contraseña para que revisemos el documento.

Shared Goals

You can also use para que to talk about shared goals, plans, or natural events.

I want to save money so that we travel to Mexico.
Quiero ahorrar dinero para que viajemos a México.
We need the rain so that the weather improves.
Necesitamos la lluvia para que el clima mejore.
