Persistent repetition (verb + que + verb)

Crafting Perfumes

Let's explore some vocabulary for crafting fragrances, such as destilar (to distill) and diluir (to dilute).

I start to distill the floral essence.
Empiezo a destilar la esencia floral.
It is here where I dilute the extract.
Es aquí donde diluyo el extracto.

Persistent Repetition: Verb + que + Verb

To express that an action happens continuously or persistently, use this common structure: conjugated verb + que + same conjugated verb.

This is equivalent to repeating the English verb with "and" in the middle (like "mixes and mixes" or "shakes and shakes").

She mixes and mixes the jasmine.
Ella mezcla que mezcla el jazmín.
You shake and shake the formula.
Tú agitas que agitas la fórmula.
He sells and sells the perfume.
Él vende que vende el perfume.

Matching the Subject

Both verbs must be conjugated exactly the same way to match the subject. If "I" am doing the distilling, both verbs take the yo form.

I distill and distill the jasmine essence.
Yo destilo que destilo la esencia de jazmín.
You dilute and dilute the extract with water.
Tú diluyes que diluyes el extracto con agua.

This structure works with any verb, even those with stem changes like oler (to smell), which changes to huele.

The expert smells and smells the vanilla.
El experto huele que huele la vainilla.
