Past conjecture (habré, habrá)

In Spanish, you can use the future perfect tense to express a guess, doubt, or assumption about something that happened in the recent past. This translates to English phrases like "must have" or "could have."

To form the future perfect, use the future tense of the auxiliary verb haber followed by a past participle.

habráscortado / cosido
él / ella / ustedhabrácortado / cosido

Wondering aloud ("Could have")

Use this structure in a question to wonder aloud about a recent event, such as where a missing tool might be or how a complex garment was constructed.

Where could the tailor have left the needle?
¿Dónde habrá dejado la aguja el sastre?
How could they have sewn this lace sleeve?
¿Cómo habrán cosido esta manga de encaje?

Making deductions ("Must have")

Use it in a statement to conclude what most likely happened. Note that some common verbs have irregular past participles, like poner (puesto) and romper (roto).

I must have put the pin on the mannequin.
Habré puesto el alfiler en el maniquí.
The tailor must have cut the lining so that the dress fits perfectly.
El sastre habrá cortado el forro para que el vestido quede perfecto.
The man must have torn the collar and the hem of his shirt.
El hombre habrá roto el cuello y el dobladillo de su camisa.
We must have looked at the lining, but not the hem of the dress.
Habremos mirado el forro, pero no el dobladillo del vestido.
