Pointing Further Away: "That" and "Those"
To point out objects slightly further away (often closer to the listener), use medium demonstrative adjectives. These translate to "that" and "those" in English. They must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.
| Masculine | Feminine | |
|---|---|---|
| Singular (That) | ese | esa |
| Plural (Those) | esos | esas |
Singular: Ese and Esa
Use ese for masculine nouns and esa for feminine nouns. If you already know este and esta, these are easy to remember: just drop the "t"!
| That red coat and that white blouse are pretty. | Ese abrigo rojo y esa blusa blanca son bonitos. |
Plural: Esos and Esas
To say "those", use esos for masculine plural nouns and esas for feminine plural nouns. Notice that just like este becomes estos, the plural of ese is esos (not eses).
| I need those coats for the winter. | Necesito esos abrigos para el invierno. |
| Those books on the shelf are very expensive. | Esos libros en el estante son muy caros. |
| We want to buy those long skirts today. | Queremos comprar esas faldas largas hoy. |
