Impersonal "se" with people
When using the impersonal se for general statements ("one does" or "they do"), the verb usually matches the following noun. However, when the direct object is a person, you must use the personal a.
| For this role, an actor with a lot of charisma is sought. | Para este rol, se busca a un actor con mucho carisma. |
When combining the impersonal se with the personal a, the verb is always singular, even if it refers to multiple people. The personal a clearly marks the noun as an object, locking the verb into the third-person singular.
Notice how the verbs below remain singular (convoca, selecciona, evalúa) despite referring to plural groups:
| The candidates are summoned for the audition. | Se convoca a los candidatos para la audición. |
| During the audition, the best models are selected. | Durante la audición, se selecciona a los mejores modelos. |
| The women are evaluated by their appearance and their portfolio. | Se evalúa a las mujeres por su apariencia y su portafolio. |
