Hypothetical comparisons (como si)

Hypothetical comparisons with "como si"

Working at a luxury hotel means dealing with demanding VIPs who often act like royalty. To describe these exaggerated behaviors, you can make hypothetical comparisons using como si (as if).

Because the comparison describes a situation that isn't actually real (the guest is not a queen), como si must always be followed by the imperfect subjunctive.

The woman demands things as if she were a queen.
La mujer exige cosas como si fuera una reina.
The millionaire talks to me as if I worked for him.
El millonario me habla como si yo trabajara para él.
The client asks for things as if he lived here.
El cliente pide cosas como si viviera aquí.

A quick spelling reminder

Just like with other unreal situations, remember that the nosotros form of the imperfect subjunctive always requires a written accent on the vowel immediately before the -ramos ending.

The man feels superior and treats us as if we were his butlers.
El hombre se siente superior y nos trata como si fuéramos sus mayordomos.
