More and More, Less and Less
To express that something is changing gradually, like getting "more and more" or "less and less" of something, Spanish uses the phrases cada vez más and cada vez menos.
You can use these expressions directly before an adjective or adverb to describe a quality that is increasing or decreasing over time.
| I get more and more anxious because of the cell phone notifications. | Estoy cada vez más ansioso por las notificaciones del celular. |
| The digital environment is getting more and more boring, so I appreciate nature. | El entorno digital es cada vez más aburrido, así que aprecio la naturaleza. |
| I like to interact with my environment more and more naturally. | Me gusta interactuar con mi entorno de manera cada vez más natural. |
Gradual Changes with Nouns and Verbs
You can also use cada vez más and cada vez menos to talk about quantities of things (nouns) or the frequency of actions (verbs).
When used with nouns, they translate to "more and more" or "fewer and fewer" / "less and less".
| When you stop using the phone, you will have fewer and fewer distractions. | Cuando dejes de usar el teléfono, tendrás cada vez menos distracciones. |
| The thing is, I'm getting more and more addicted to digital life. | Es que tengo cada vez más adicción a la vida digital. |
When describing how often you do an action, the phrase usually comes after the verb.
| We interact virtually less and less in order to appreciate reality. | Interactuamos virtualmente cada vez menos para apreciar la realidad. |
