As Long As: Mientras with the Subjunctive
To express "as long as" for future conditions or lifelong vows, use mientras followed by the present subjunctive.
While mientras with the indicative simply means "while" (describing simultaneous events), mientras with the subjunctive projects into the future. It makes the main action depend on an ongoing condition.
Future tense + mientras + present subjunctive
| The brotherhood will endure as long as we keep the secret. | La hermandad perdurará mientras guardemos el secreto. |
| The oath will be eternal as long as they do not betray the pact. | El juramento será eterno mientras ellos no traicionen el pacto. |
The main clause is usually in the simple future tense, but it can also use future-leaning structures like tener que (to have to) or poder (to be able to).
| The lodge will guard the sanctuary as long as it has strength. | La logia custodiará el santuario mientras tenga fuerza. |
| The brotherhood will have to guard the sanctuary as long as there is danger. | La hermandad tendrá que custodiar el santuario mientras haya peligro. |
