Formal Concessions: Si bien
When you want to say "although" or "even though," a slightly more formal alternative to aunque is si bien.
Because it introduces an established fact rather than a hypothetical situation, si bien is followed by the indicative mood.
| Even though the antioxidant helps, it is not the cure. | Si bien el antioxidante ayuda, no es la cura. |
| Although you consume vitamins, your health depends on a balanced diet. | Si bien consumes vitaminas, tu salud depende de una dieta equilibrada. |
You can place the si bien clause at the beginning of the sentence, or embed it in the middle of a thought.
| It is said that, although the smoothie is healthy, it affects digestion. | Se dice que, si bien el batido es sano, afecta la digestión. |
Clarifying with O sea
To clarify a point or rephrase something directly, use o sea (that is / in other words).
| Even though the product seems miraculous, it is deceptive, that is, fake. | Si bien el producto parece milagroso, es engañoso, o sea, falso. |
