Expressing annoyance
Normally, you place a demonstrative adjective before the noun: este charlatán (this smooth talker).
To express mild annoyance, frustration, or contempt, move the demonstrative after the noun and add a definite article (el, la, los, or las) before it.
Definite article + noun + demonstrative
| This charlatan is always inopportune. | El charlatán este siempre es inoportuno. |
Gender and number agreement
As always, the article and demonstrative must agree in gender and number with the noun.
| This lady is aggressive, and I don't want to deal with her. | La señora esta es agresiva y no quiero lidiar con ella. |
| These men are shameless; close the door with a slam. | Los hombres estos son unos descarados, cierren la puerta con un portazo. |
This structure is incredibly common in spoken Spanish when venting about someone whose behavior is aggressive or just plain annoying.
| This salesperson tries to sweet-talk me so that I buy the dinnerware. | El vendedor este me intenta engatusar para que compre la vajilla. |
| Don't open the door so this smooth talker doesn't get in. | No abran la puerta para que el charlatán este no entre. |
