Desires and plans (querer)

Expressing Desires with "Querer"

To talk about your plans or what you want to do, use the verb querer (to want) followed by an infinitive. An infinitive is the base, dictionary form of a verb that ends in -ar, -er, or -ir (like mejorar or tener).

Conjugate querer to match the person who wants to do the action. Notice that the e in the stem changes to ie for most forms:

PronounQuerer (to want)
yoquiero
quieres
él / ella / ustedquiere
nosotros / nosotrasqueremos
ellos / ellas / ustedesquieren
I want to improve my life.
Quiero mejorar mi vida.
She wants to take a class at the university.
Ella quiere tomar una clase en la universidad.
Do you want to have a healthy future?
¿Tú quieres tener un futuro saludable?

Two Verbs Together

When two verbs go together to express a single idea, only the first verb is conjugated. The second verb always stays in the infinitive form.

Notice how queremos and quieren change to match the speaker, but action verbs like lograr (to achieve) and enseñar (to teach) do not change:

We want to achieve our goal because it is important.
Nosotros queremos lograr nuestra meta porque es importante.
They want to teach at the university.
Ellos quieren enseñar en la universidad.

Use this simple pattern to talk about your personal goals and future plans!

I want to look for a better future for my family.
Quiero buscar un futuro mejor para mi familia.
She wants to look for a new job in the city.
Ella quiere buscar un trabajo nuevo en la ciudad.
