Comparatives of inequality (más / menos ... que)

Comparing Things: "More Than"

When you want to say that a place or thing has more of a certain quality than another, Spanish uses a simple formula. To say "more... than", use más, followed by an adjective, and then que.

más + adjective + que

The river is longer than the lake.
El río es más largo que el lago.
The desert is drier than the forest.
El desierto es más seco que el bosque.

Adjective Agreement

Remember that the adjective in the middle of your comparison must match the gender and number of the first noun—the one you are describing! Notice how alta matches montaña in the example below.

This mountain is higher than the valley.
Esta montaña es más alta que el valle.

"Less Than"

To say something is "less... than", just swap más for menos.

menos + adjective + que

The desert is less popular than the island.
El desierto es menos popular que la isla.
The river is less deep than the lake.
El río es menos profundo que el lago.
