Collective subjects (la mayoría de)

Collective subjects

When talking about groups online—like users on a forum or subscribers to a membership—you will often use collective phrases like la mayoría de (the majority of), una minoría de (a minority of), or un grupo de (a group of).

When these phrases are followed by a plural noun (like los usuarios or los miembros), you can conjugate the verb in either the singular or the plural.

Plural verbs (Agreement by sense)

It is very common to conjugate the verb in the plural to match the plural noun right next to it (e.g., los usuarios). Since you are talking about multiple people, this naturally makes sense to native speakers.

The majority of users read the forum, since it is free.
La mayoría de los usuarios leen el foro, ya que es gratuito.
A minority of members do not pay the membership, which is unfair.
Una minoría de los miembros no pagan la membresía, lo que es injusto.

Singular verbs (Grammatical agreement)

Alternatively, you can conjugate the verb in the singular. Grammatically, the verb is matching the singular collective noun itself (la mayoría, la minoría, or el grupo).

Both singular and plural verbs are perfectly correct in these sentences!

A group of active followers prefers the subscription.
Un grupo de seguidores activos prefiere la suscripción.
A minority of community members writes a comment.
Una minoría de los miembros de la comunidad escribe un comentario.
