Describing "how" with gerunds
When working in a shipping warehouse (la bodega), you often need to explain exactly how a task is performed.
In Spanish, you describe how an action is done using the simple gerund (the verb form ending in -ando or -iendo). This acts as an adverb, modifying the main verb.
| He arrived at the warehouse running. | Él llegó a la bodega corriendo. |
Expressing "by doing" something
In English, we usually describe the method or means of an action using the word "by" (e.g., "by scanning," "by driving"). A common trap is trying to translate this "by" into Spanish using a preposition like por or con.
Instead, use the gerund all by itself, without any preposition. The gerund alone communicates "by doing" the action.
| I help in the warehouse dispatching shipments. | Ayudo en la bodega despachando envíos. |
| He did the inventory scanning the labels. | Él hizo el inventario escaneando las etiquetas. |
This structure is perfect for describing warehouse logistics. Just state the main action, followed immediately by the gerund that explains the method:
| We track the shipment scanning the code. | Rastreamos el envío escaneando el código. |
| They distribute the packages stacking the boxes. | Distribuyen los paquetes apilando las cajas. |
| He distributes the inventory by driving the forklift. | Él distribuye el inventario manejando el montacargas. |
