Additive connectors (es más, encima)

Escalating complaints with "es más"

When complaining about a truly disastrous event—like a terrible amateur talent show—you often need to escalate your grievances. The connector es más (what's more, in fact, moreover) is perfect for this.

It introduces a statement that reinforces and intensifies the previous one, showing that the situation is even more extreme or absurd than you just described.

The magician was pathetic; what's more, he ruined the trick.
The event is an absurdity; what's more, the organizer resigned.
His performance was pitiful. In fact, I almost cried from rage.
Su actuación fue lamentable. Es más, casi lloro de rabia.

Piling on with "encima"

To add insult to injury, use encima (on top of that). While physically meaning "on top," in an argument it piles another negative point onto an already bad situation. It is very frequently preceded by the conjunction y (and).

The singer was uncoordinated, and on top of that, the sound technician failed.
The choir was pitiful, and on top of that, the people were yawning.
Look at him! He is clumsy and on top of that he dances badly.
¡Míralo! Es torpe y encima baila mal.

The final straw: "por si fuera poco"

When you want to deliver the final, most outrageous grievance in your string of complaints, use the phrase por si fuera poco (as if that weren't enough).

This connector signals that the situation has reached its absolute limit of disaster.

The performance disappointed the audience; as if that weren't enough, the sound technician made a mistake.
We felt secondhand embarrassment, and as if that weren't enough, we started to yawn.
Sentimos vergüenza ajena y, por si fuera poco, empezamos a bostezar.
The organizer insulted us, and as if that weren't enough, he canceled the event.
