Questions & Answers about Хотя медвежья лапа огромная, она очень мягкая.
Why is the adjective for "bear's" written as медвежья instead of keeping the "д" from медведь?
Possessive adjectives formed from animal names often trigger consonant mutations in the root. Here, the д in медведь (bear) changes to ж. Because it modifies the feminine noun лапа (paw), it takes the feminine nominative possessive ending -ья.
Is there a difference in meaning between saying медвежья лапа and using the genitive case, лапа медведя?
Yes, a subtle one. The possessive adjective медвежья лапа is usually preferred when describing the general type or characteristics of a bear's paw. Using the genitive лапа медведя tends to mean "the paw of a specific bear". For stating a general fact like in this sentence, the possessive adjective is the most natural choice.
How would медвежья change if it were the object of the sentence, such as "I touched a bear's paw"?
It would change to медвежью. For feminine possessive adjectives of this type, the accusative ending replaces the -я with -ю, but crucially keeps the soft sign. So you would say медвежью лапу.
Why does the second clause use она for "it" rather than a neuter pronoun?
While English uses "it" for animal body parts, Russian strictly replaces nouns with pronouns that match their grammatical gender. Она (she) is required here because it refers back to лапа, which is a feminine noun.
