Questions & Answers about Розничные покупатели тоже хотят скидку.
Why is скидку in the accusative case here instead of the genitive, which is often used with the verb хотеть?
The verb хотеть takes the accusative case when you are talking about a specific, concrete object. The genitive case is used for abstract or partitive meanings (wanting "some" of something) or in negative sentences. Since a discount is treated as a specific, countable concept here, скидку is in the accusative.
Could we use также instead of тоже in this sentence?
You could, but тоже is the most natural choice here. We use тоже to show that a subject performs the exact same action as someone else mentioned previously. Также is slightly more formal and is often used to add a new action or idea, similar to "furthermore" or "in addition."
How does understanding the root of скидка help us remember its meaning?
The nominative form скидка comes from the verb скинуть (to throw off or drop). It combines the prefix с- (off or down) with the verb кинуть (to throw). Therefore, a discount is literally an amount that is "thrown off" the regular price.
Why do we use the adjective розничные instead of combining two nouns like in the English phrase "retail customers"?
