Questions & Answers about Вчера США объявили новое решение.
Why is the verb объявили in the plural form?
США stands for Соединённые Штаты Америки (United States of America). To figure out the grammatical gender or number of an indeclinable abbreviation, you look at the head noun in the full phrase. Because Штаты (States) is plural, США is treated as a plural subject. That is why it takes the plural past tense verb объявили.
If the sentence used a different case, would США change its ending?
No, США is an indeclinable initialism, meaning it never changes its form. Whether it is the subject, the direct object, or following a preposition that requires the prepositional or genitive case, it is always written and pronounced exactly as США.
How is США actually pronounced when reading this sentence aloud?
It is pronounced by naming its letters: Сэ-Шэ-А. Even though the Russian letter С is officially named эс in the alphabet, native speakers almost always pronounce this specific initialism as Сэ-Шэ-А. Because it consists entirely of consonants and doesn't form a readable word, you must spell out the letters.
Is новое решение in the nominative or accusative case here?
It is in the accusative case because it is the direct object receiving the action of being announced. However, because решение is an inanimate neuter noun, its accusative form is identical to its nominative dictionary form. The adjective новое also perfectly matches this inanimate neuter pattern.
Could we use сообщили (reported) instead of объявили (announced)?
