Questions & Answers about Он молчит насчёт дедлайна и правок.
How does the preposition насчёт affect the nouns in this sentence?
Насчёт means regarding or concerning and it always requires the Genitive case. That is why the masculine singular noun дедлайн becomes дедлайна and the feminine plural noun правки becomes правок.
Could I just use о instead of насчёт to say about?
Yes, but you would need to change the case. If you use о, the nouns must be in the Prepositional case, making it о дедлайне и правках. Using насчёт is very natural in workplace contexts when you want to say on the subject of.
Why does the feminine noun правка turn into правок here?
Because we are talking about plural edits in the Genitive case. For feminine nouns ending in -ка, dropping the final -а for the Genitive plural creates an awkward consonant cluster. To make it easier to pronounce, Russian inserts a fleeting -о- between the consonants, resulting in правок.
Is дедлайн a real Russian word, and does it decline like a native word?
It is a direct borrowing from English that has become extremely common in modern Russian business and casual work environments. It is fully adapted into the grammar and treated as a standard masculine noun ending in a consonant, which is why it takes a regular -а ending in the Genitive case.
