Questions & Answers about Тебе стоит прислушаться, зато мне не следует её отговаривать.
Both halves of the sentence start with a pronoun in the dative case (тебе, мне). Why?
Both стоит (it is worth) and следует (one ought to) are impersonal verbs. In Russian, impersonal constructions express an obligation or state without a traditional subject in the nominative case. Instead, the person receiving the advice goes in the dative case. Note the subtle difference in meaning: стоит is practical advice (it makes sense for you), whereas следует sounds more like a moral obligation or strict rule (it is not proper for me).
Why is прислушаться perfective, but отговаривать imperfective?
This is a crucial rule for negative advice. Affirmative advice usually takes the perfective aspect to focus on a completed result: тебе стоит прислушаться (you should complete the action of taking heed). However, when you advise against doing something (не следует, не стоит, не надо), Russian strongly prefers the imperfective aspect. Мне не следует её отговаривать means it is a bad idea to even engage in the process of dissuading her at all.
Could I just use но (but) instead of зато?
You could, but зато adds a specific nuance of balance or compensation. It translates closely to 'but on the other hand' or 'but to make up for it'. While но just states a simple contrast, зато emphasizes the trade-off in the situation: your role is to listen, and on the flip side, my role is to stay out of it and not dissuade her.
What is the difference between simply using послушать and using прислушаться?
While послушать just means 'to listen' to something for a while (like a song or a story), прислушаться means 'to take heed', 'to take advice', or 'to listen very closely'. The prefix при- combined with the reflexive -ся ending often gives verbs a sense of doing something attentively and absorbing the information for your own benefit.
