Questions & Answers about Не успел телефон разрядиться, как отключили электричество.
How does the не успел... как... construction work here, and why is успел in the masculine form?
This construction translates to "no sooner had [something happened] than [something else happened]". The verb успел literally means "had time to", but here it forms the grammatical structure. It is in the masculine past tense because it must agree with the subject of the first clause, which is the masculine noun телефон.
Why use the infinitive разрядиться instead of a past tense verb for the phone dying?
In the не успел ... как structure, the first action is always expressed with an infinitive after успел. You must use the perfective aspect, like разрядиться (to lose charge/die), because the construction focuses on the exact moment an action was completed right before the interruption.
Why is отключили in the plural form if no specific "they" is mentioned?
Russian frequently uses the third-person plural past tense to describe actions performed by an unknown, unspecified, or institutional actor (like a utility company). It is the standard active way to express the English passive "the electricity was cut off" or the general phrase "the power went out".
Is электричество the subject of the second clause?
No, электричество is the direct object of the verb отключили. It is in the accusative case, which looks identical to the nominative for inanimate neuter nouns. The literal structure of the second half is "how [they] disconnected the electricity".
