Questions & Answers about Он же подписал новое распоряжение вопреки регламенту!
How does the preposition вопреки affect the noun регламент here?
The preposition вопреки means contrary to or in defiance of and always requires the Dative case. That is why the masculine noun регламент (regulation, rules of procedure) takes the Dative ending -у, becoming вопреки регламенту.
Why is же translated as "But" in this sentence? Doesn't it usually just add emphasis?
While же is often an emphatic particle, when placed near the beginning of a sentence (especially after a pronoun like он), it frequently expresses contradiction, indignation, or surprise. Here, it acts like an emotional "But..." or "How could he...", showing the speaker's shock that the rules were broken.
Is a распоряжение just another word for a law?
Not quite. While a закон is a formal law passed by a legislature, a распоряжение is an administrative directive, order, or instruction. You will often see this word used in bureaucratic and business contexts when a manager or government official issues a formal command.
Why is новое распоряжение in the Accusative case?
The verb подписать (to sign) is transitive, meaning its direct object takes the Accusative case. Because распоряжение is an inanimate neuter noun, its Accusative form looks exactly the same as its Nominative form. You would typically only see the Genitive used here if the action were negated, such as он не подписал нового распоряжения.
