Questions & Answers about Ледники тают всё быстрее.
Why do we use всё here instead of repeating the comparative like in the English "faster and faster"?
In Russian, the most natural way to express a progressive change ("faster and faster" or "increasingly fast") is by placing the invariable particle всё right before the comparative form. While you could technically say быстрее и быстрее, всё быстрее is much more common and idiomatic.
Does the word всё change to match the plural subject ледники?
No. When used for progressive comparison, всё acts as a fixed particle rather than a pronoun. It never changes its form, regardless of the gender, case, or number of the noun it relates to.
The verb is тают. What is the infinitive, and does it follow a predictable pattern?
The infinitive is таять (to melt). It belongs to the first conjugation class. Verbs ending in -ять often cause hesitation, but it conjugates smoothly if you remember the pattern: я таю, ты таешь, он/она тает, and они тают. Keep in mind this is an imperfective verb, focusing on the ongoing process of melting.
Is the word ледники related to the basic Russian word for ice?
