Questions & Answers about Морской воздух очень полезный.
The English translation says "good for you", but there is no "для вас" or "тебе" in the Russian sentence. Why?
The adjective полезный directly translates to "useful" or "beneficial". When talking about food, habits, or environments, it translates naturally to "healthy" or "good for you". In Russian, you don't need to specify who it is beneficial for when making a general statement like this. If you wanted to be specific, you could add для здоровья (for health) or для вас (for you), but it's completely unnecessary here.
Could I use the short adjective полезен here instead of the long form полезный?
Yes, absolutely! Saying Морской воздух очень полезен is very natural and grammatically correct. Using the short adjective (полезен) often sounds slightly more formal, bookish, or definitive, as if stating a universal scientific fact. The long form (полезный) used in this sentence sounds a bit more conversational and relaxed, which is very common in everyday spoken Russian.
How does the noun море (sea) become the adjective морской?
Russian frequently uses the suffix -ск- to turn nouns into adjectives. With море, the final vowel is dropped, and because the stress shifts to the very end of the word, it takes the stressed masculine ending -ой, giving us морской. You'll recognize this exact same pattern in adjectives like городской (from город, city) or мужской (from мужчина, man).
