What a Thing Is Made Of
Russian builds material adjectives straight off the noun: железо → железный, серебро → серебряный, and золото → золотой, which the course gave you long ago.
железный ключ, серебряная ложка, золотое кольцо
Like золотой, these two also work as praise: железный характер is an iron will.
| He has an iron character. | У него железный характер. |
Scale and Importance
| adjective | what it says |
|---|---|
| крупный | large in scale — a big company, a major city |
| основной | the main one of several — basic, principal |
| особый | special, of a different kind from the rest |
| точный | exact, precise — of a figure, a time, an answer |
| оригинальный | original, not a copy; also unusual |
Крупный is not simply большой. A big apple is большое яблоко; a big company is крупная компания. Use крупный for scale and significance, большой for physical size.
| This is a large company. | Это крупная компания. |
Морской
Морской is the adjective of море — everything of the sea: морской воздух, морская рыба, морской порт.
| Sea air is very good for you. | Морской воздух очень полезный. |
