Questions & Answers about Где нужно сделать пересадку?
Why is there no Russian word for 'I' in this sentence, even though the English translation says 'Where do I have to change?'
In Russian, this is an impersonal sentence using нужно (it is necessary). It literally translates to 'Where is it necessary to make a transfer?' English naturally prefers to use 'I' or 'we' in these practical situations, but Russian often uses this general structure. You could add мне (to me) before нужно, but it isn't strictly required.
Why is the verb сделать used here instead of a verb meaning 'to change'?
When talking about changing transport (like trains, buses, or flights), Russian uses the noun пересадка (a transfer). To express the action, you combine it with the verb сделать (to do / to make). Instead of a single verb for 'change', you literally say 'to make a transfer' (сделать пересадку).
Why does пересадку end in -у?
The dictionary form of the word is пересадка, which is a feminine noun. In this sentence, it is the direct object of the verb сделать (it is the thing being made), so it must take the accusative case. For feminine nouns ending in -а, the ending changes to -у in the accusative.
Why use the perfective verb сделать rather than the imperfective делать after нужно?
You are asking about completing one specific transfer for your current journey. The perfective сделать focuses on successfully completing a single action. If you used the imperfective делать, it would imply a repeated or habitual action, like asking 'Where does one generally have to transfer on this route every day?'
