Questions & Answers about Вверху окна большая лампа.
Why use вверху here instead of над for "above"?
Над usually means "suspended over" or "directly above" in space, and it takes the instrumental case. Вверху often means "at the top part of" and takes the genitive case. In this sentence, вверху окна implies the lamp is situated at the upper part of the window frame or wall, rather than hanging freely in the air over it.
Why is the word окна in the genitive case?
When the spatial adverb вверху (at the top / above) is followed by an object, it acts as a preposition and requires that object to be in the genitive case. Therefore, the neuter noun окно becomes окна.
Why does the location (Вверху окна) come before the subject (большая лампа)?
Russian word order places new or important information at the end of the sentence. Starting with the location and ending with the object is the standard way to express "There is a [thing] in a [place]." If you reversed it to Большая лампа вверху окна, it would change the meaning slightly to "The big lamp is above the window," assuming the listener already knows about the lamp.
Why isn't there a word for "there is" or "is" in the Russian sentence?
In Russian, the verb "to be" is almost always omitted in the present tense. While you likely learned this from simple descriptions early on, it is easy to forget that it also applies to sentences describing existence or location. The combination of location and subject alone naturally conveys the "There is..." meaning.
