Questions & Answers about Я не могу это резать без кусачек или плоскогубцев.
Why are кусачек and плоскогубцев in this specific case?
They follow the preposition без (without), which always requires the Genitive case. Since кусачки (wire cutters) and плоскогубцы (pliers) are "plural-only" nouns, we must use their Genitive plural forms here.
How do we get the Genitive form кусачек from the dictionary word кусачки?
Like many regular plural nouns, кусачки drops its final -и to form the Genitive. However, simply dropping it would leave a hard-to-pronounce consonant cluster (-чк). To fix this, a "fleeting" vowel -е- is inserted to break up the consonants, resulting in кусачек.
Why does плоскогубцы take an -ев ending to become плоскогубцев instead of just dropping the final vowel?
Plural-only nouns ending in -цы usually take either an -ов or -ев ending in the Genitive case. Because the stress falls earlier in the word rather than on the ending, it uses the unstressed -ев.
Why use the imperfective verb резать instead of a perfective verb like разрезать?
Using the imperfective резать focuses on the general ability or the process of cutting itself: "I am fundamentally unable to perform the cutting action on this." If you used a perfective verb, it would focus on the result, meaning "I cannot successfully finish cutting this."
