Мы не рекомендуем вам это блюдо.

Questions & Answers about Мы не рекомендуем вам это блюдо.

Why do we use вам instead of вас here?
The verb рекомендовать (to recommend) takes the Dative case for the person receiving the recommendation, just like verbs of giving or assisting (recommending is like "giving advice"). So we use the Dative вам (to you) rather than the Accusative вас.
The infinitive is рекомендовать. Why does it change to рекомендуем with an у?
Russian verbs ending in -овать have a special spelling rule in the present tense: they drop the -ова- part and replace it with -у- (or -ю-). That is why рекомендовать becomes я рекомендую and мы рекомендуем.
Is это блюдо in the Nominative case?
It is actually in the Accusative case, because it is the direct object (the thing being recommended). Since блюдо (dish) is an inanimate neuter noun, its Accusative form looks exactly the same as its Nominative dictionary form.
Could I change the word order and say Мы не рекомендуем это блюдо вам?
Yes, because Russian word order is flexible, but it changes the emphasis. Placing the Dative pronoun (вам) before the direct object (это блюдо) is the most neutral, standard phrasing. Putting вам at the very end strongly stresses it: "We don't recommend this dish to you (but we might to someone else)."
