Неужели эта сенсация — правда?

Questions & Answers about Неужели эта сенсация — правда?

How does неужели change the meaning compared to using разве?
Both are question particles, but they carry different emotions. Неужели expresses strong surprise, shock, or disbelief, like saying "Is it actually possible that...?" or "Really?!" Разве, on the other hand, expresses mild doubt or seeks confirmation, closer to "Isn't it true that...?" or "I thought it was true, is it not?"
Why is there an em dash (—) before правда?
The dash acts as a bridge, replacing the missing present-tense verb "is." In Russian grammar, when both the subject of the sentence (сенсация) and the predicate defining it (правда) are nouns in the nominative case, they are connected with a dash in writing.
Why do we use эта instead of the standard это?
Because "this" is attached directly to the feminine noun сенсация to mean "this sensation," so it must agree in gender and case (эта). You would only use the fixed, neutral это if "this" was the subject of the sentence on its own, such as if you were simply saying Это — правда (This is the truth).
Правда is a noun meaning "truth." Why aren't we using an adjective for "true" here?
While Russian does have adjectives for "true" or "correct" (like верный or истинный), it is extremely natural and standard in Russian to just use the noun правда when stating that something is true. You are literally asking, "Is this sensation the truth?"
